Railorad town, birthplace of Stonewall Jackson at 326 Main Street.
Downtown is a great place to photograph old signs and brick walls.
Our Greenbrier Motel 'did not meet AAA standards.' Shower and beds
were good. Restaurant on premises and the rooms were behind the office
and restaurant which shielded the rooms from the hilly curve and traffic
noise on Hwy. 20.

South on US 119, at Philippi, is the largest covered bridge in
West Virginia over the Tygart River. Built in 1852 and 285 feet long
it stands red and white restored after a 1989 fire destroyed it.
Unleaded gas only and it is 10% ethonol. Many 'Elect Bubba Sheriff'
in many states in the east. The speeding penalty in this hilly curvy
country is death by collision with a tree.

A great morning drive...all drivers are going to work and I'm
NOT. All kids are going to school and I'm NOT. Sunny hazy hills
and the weather is cool. Road signs: "Watch Ice on Bridges" and
"Rough Road" for unfixed chuck holes. One sign said 9% grade, the steepest
we saw on the whole 3,073 miles. Enough possum roadkill to feed a small
community, will probably be the special at lunch! Sign: Gas $1.50
a gallon....station was out of business. Hairpin turns and bridges
with signs that say, "Trucks and busses cross one at a time!" A turkey
vulture crossed the road as I approached, his wingspand the size of my car!
Most of the yellow lines on curves are scrubbed off by cars crossing
the lines.
( 7 miles of Maryland)
The roads are so curvy that my left hand actually hurts from
turning the steering wheel so much.
Along the road the woods in one area was full of large
antiques.

Got gas here and a man talked about our cars saying he used to race his '55
Chevy when he was a hippie on a straight stretch of road he called, "Chat
and Chew." Stopped at Shirley's Diner. Shirley's daughter Angie
waited on us and we talked about our trip. Shirley came out from the
kitchen saying she had owned the restaurant for 6 years as of Jan. 17. She
gave us breakfast!
As the Prairie Rose Wranglers said, "When the moon comes over the mountain
in WV, it comes in gallon jugs." Here a 'howdy' from one car to the
other is two raised fingers or a raised head and ball cap two inches.

It is so hilly here that my GPS cannot get a fix on 3 satellites.
So curvy here that emergency vehicles can't get ahead of local traffic.
All my pictures are 'drive by shootings.'
We pass into Virginia at 11:35 a.m. Distances here are short on miles
and long on time.
