No sooner did we arrive in Utah, driving east on Hwy. 50, than a State Trooper car heading west had his lights on and was flagging us down. When I pulled up alongside him, he said "We have a wide load coming behind me so pull well off the road to let it pass.
It sure was wide! It was a new dump truck bed that we presumed was headed for Ely and the Kennecott mine which was to reopen soon.

Delta is the first town in UT on Hwy. 50, and there is no habitation along those 100 miles.
Topaz Camp was a Japanese internment camp set up in the desert west of Delta.

Home of one of Butch Cassidy and the Hole-In-The-Wall
Gang's most daring heists. It was a daylight robbery of a coal-mining
company's train in Castlegate, UT, April 1897. Butch grabbed the satchel
of $9,000 and rode off. The gang shared proceeds form their robberies
with the widows and children of men killed or ruined by bankers and cattle
barons.

Had motel reservations here and arrived early. Paul did laundry on the premises.
Next morning, Hwy. 50 piggybacks on I-70 to Grand Junction, Colorado. We left the motel at 7:20 and at 8 a.m. we pulled off at the Salt Wash View Area, 5,902 feet and 72 degrees.
I imagine this rock formation is called crouching lion.
