SEE THE USA IN YOUR CHEVROLET

Coast to Coast and Border to Border.  West to East.

Maine May 25, 2004

One day I ventured out on my own from Fitchburg, MA, on a one-day drive to the coast of southern Maine, New Hampshire, and Mass. to photograph lighthouses.  I did all this and still got back in time for desert in the evening at Paul Jr.'s.

Lighthouse Depot, Wells, Maine.  Here you can buy most anything related to lighthouses.  I receive their catalog and have won two awards in their lighthouse photo contest.  Stop here first and pick up a sheet of directions to the lighthouses in their area.

It was a real treat to return to these lighthouses.  Sue, Matthew (age 5), and I had visited Portland Head and Nubble lighthouses in the summer of 1979!  I can't quite describe the feeling, standing in the exact spot I stood 25 years ago, this time alone, and photographing the same ancient lighthouse.  Twenty-five years is just a blink of an eye in the lighthouse's 200-year lifetime, but on this cool, cloudy day I was warmed within by pleasant thoughts of my family as I stood here with very few visitors.  This is the most photographed lighthouse in the US, perhaps because of it is easy to get to, has ample parking, and is maintained by a proud community.

Since I was the only person in the parking lot, I took the initiative to prove that the ol' Chevy actually made it to the east coast.

All sorts of boats and ships pass between the Portland Head Light and the harbor light.
